Forty years ago, today, April 16, 1980, West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department lost one of its own. Active Life Member Thomas L. Graves, “Tommy,” was taken from us on Box 18-2, at 9923 Good Luck Road. Tommy was working at Glendale Station 18 as the Tower Driver when he responded on the call. While battling the fire at the garden apartment, an explosion occurred causing part of the building to collapse burying Tommy under the front brick wall. Thomas Graves paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life in service to his fellow man. He was the first career Firefighter of Prince George’s County Fire Department to be killed in the line of duty. Tommy laid in state at Station 28 before being laid to rest. Very sad day. A couple weeks before that I measured him for a Class A uniform . He told me now they have something to bury me in.

Tommy and Tucker Clark ran me around as a rookie and taught me what it was to be a firefighter. I used to go to the Village Pub to have a few beers with Tommy after work.

My granddad was chief of glendale at the time and he would get upset every time is was mentioned. Rip

Karen, I am so sorry for your loss. A lovely tribute...

Great guy remember that horrible day 😪👨‍🚒

Love and miss him always

Good Man, thanks for posting. Let's not forget him!!!

Rest in Peace Brother.

I was on Truck 39 that day 🙁

Rest Easy Brother!!🇺🇸🇺🇸

That day changed my Dad for the rest of his life

Love you Tommy Honey!!

RIP Sir🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸

Awesome guy!!

The Officers and Members of the West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad regrets to announce the passing of Fire Chief Scott Emmons. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Life member Ryan Emmons and the entire Emmons family.

Please see Rockville Volunteer Fire Department’s announcement below.

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Past Fire Chief and current Deputy Fire Chief Scott Eric Emmons. Chief Emmons began his service to the RVFD as a student live-in in 1991 and ultimately relocated to Maryland from Connecticut. In his service with Rockville, he rose through the ranks to become the Fire Chief in January of 2011, an office he held until August of 2017. Even after his term as Fire Chief concluded, his devotion remained ever constant as he continued to faithfully serve the department as a Deputy Fire Chief and mentor to many.

Chief Emmons was well known throughout Fire Department and Law Enforcement Community. Chief Emmons served as a Detective with Washington Metropolitan Police Dept. in Washington, DC where he was a member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force. He was known to be one of the most experienced and knowledgeable in his field. Scott was well respected by all that had the privilege to know and work alongside him.

Chief Emmons was a friend to all of us and a mentor to so many, we love you Scott and will miss you more than words can express.

Information regarding a memorial will be provided as soon as it is available.

Please keep the Emmons family, his friends and all of your fellow members of the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department in your thoughts and prayers as we all deal with this tragic loss.
